It’s not always easy to know when you need to paint your house. You don’t want to paint it too often and waste money, but you don’t want to wait so long that your house starts to have deeper issues (dry rot, mold).
Not to mention, painting the exterior of a house can be a major hassle so why do it more often than you need to! We’ve outlined some of the major signs to look for that indicate it might be time to paint your house.
1. The Paint is Showing Some of the Major Signs of Wear
Bubbling and peeling are some of the biggest signs that your paint job needs a facelift. Simply walking the exterior of the house, you will be able to clearly see these signs if they are present.
2. The Paint is Fading
Fading paint can make your house look old! One of the quickest ways to transform your house is to update faded paint!
3. There are Gaps or Shrinking
If the boards on your house have an apparent gap or the paint appears to have gaps between edges, you may have a problem with moisture getting into the boards of your house. A fresh paint job will seal boards and protect your house for years to come!
4. Caulk is Cracking
If you start to notice that the caulk around window edges is cracking or shrinking, you likely need to consider a paint job as this can cause problems. Water can seep through these cracks and cause dry rot to occur (which is an even bigger problem!).
5. You Are Selling Your House
Painting your house before you put it on the market is ALWAYS a good idea. Curb appeal is huge for prospective buyers and a fresh, new paint job is sure to give them a better first impression.
6. The Dirt Line on the Foundation has Substantially Dropped Below the Paint Line
This is an easily identifiable sign that a paint job might be necessary (It may also mean you need to address your grading). The ground around your house will naturally move over the years, and a paint line well above the ground can indicate it may be time to re-paint!
7. You Don’t Like the Color Anymore
Pretty obvious! BirdDog Painting has a team of experts who will help you map out a design for your paint job!
8. IT’S JUST TIME
Painting your house can prevent bigger issues in the future! Moisture behind the paint/boards of your house can lead to dry rot which can be a HUGE issue if not taken care of.
As a general rule of thumb, Exteriors should be painted every 5-10 years. Of course this timeframe depends on the quality of paint and the quality of workmanship from the last painting.
